Preliminary Survey Results

 

Note: this has been compiled based on the first 200 responses.  There are approximately 100 more yet to be entered. 

 

  1. Age – The bulk of responders were in the 41-55 year age group.
  2. Gender – The bulk of responders were male.
  3. Education – The greatest percentage of responders have a high school education.
  4. Residence – Permanent residents owning their own homes constituted the largest group.
  5. Household size – The predominant size was 2.
  6. Residence duration – Most responders have lived here over 20 years.
  7. Kids in school – 25 preschoolers, 30 in K-6, and 32 in 7-12.
  8. Source of Income – The largest category is “retired”.
  9. Opinion of Colebrook – Most folks are somewhat satisfied.
  10.  Reason for opinion – Most people like Colebrook because it is a small town.
  11. Five biggest problems – In descending order: high taxes, lack of industrial development, loss of farm lands, traffic & roads, lack of commercial development,
  12.  Most favorable facility rating: Library
     Least favorable facility rating: Recreation Areas
    Most favorable service rating: Fire Department
    Least favorable service rating: Roads
  13. People want to see improvement in:
    Facility: Skating
    Service: Biking trails
    Lowest priority:
    Facility: Tennis Courts
    Service: Game Preserves
  14. Business preference – most people want to see the town attract light industry.
  15. Colebrook should encourage development of – Manufacturing
  16. Planning Board should encourage development – outside the precinct.
  17. Housing – most respondents think sufficient housing already exists but second on the list was that we should encourage more elderly housing.
  18. Rivers and Ponds – most thought that existing regulations were sufficient to protect them.
  19. Planning Board regulations – most didn’t know whether or not they were sufficient, but of those that had an opinion, people thought they were adequate by a 2 to 1 margin.
  20. Town involvement in preservation – most thought the town should actively participate in preserving areas of scenic beauty.
  21. River Walk – most thought the town should assist in creating a river walk.
  22. Rails to Trails – most thought the town should assist in creating a rails to trails project.
  23. Downtown district – 30 said do it all, 44 said help, 40 said encourage but don’t participate, 41 said don’t participate or encourage and 37 didn’t know.
  24.  Capital Improvement Plan – the majority voted to develop one.
