Public Works Report for April
We had some spring like weather the last week of March putting us in to mud season! The road bans are on, all signs posted for each of our roads. We had the grader out on the nights below freezing to smooth out ruts formed in the mud. The wings were taken off all the plow equipment and put in the garage to repair any cracks that may have developed over the winter. Then winter jumped back into the picture. The last two weeks have been busy plowing and sanding. When time permitted the crew cleaned the wings up and made any repairs necessary.
April 1st starts a new quarter and we have to read water meters. We have almost 500 accounts and a 15 mile hike to read each and every meter. This takes a little time so we ask that people be patient and bear with us. April Hyde, Ross Riley, and Anthony Rossitto will be doing the readings this quarter.
It is also the first of the month so we have to submit our monthly reports soon; Sewer: report to the state and EPA; Water: report to the state; Landfill: report to the state for operations and groundwater monitoring. April Hyde and Kevin McKinnon write and submit these reports. There is also a quarterly report for the Landfill operation and groundwater monitoring which we write. Last year we spent $40,000.00 on a private firm submitting these quarterly reports, we felt we have the expertise to write these and save the Town some money.
We also pulled another bookshelf out of the Transfer station which will go into the office and be put to good use. The crew tried out a sandblaster that came from the Transfer station and it works great! This will save a lot of time cleaning parts and equipment for painting and repairs. We also collected a pail full of nuts and bolts.
There is a computer dask in the lab that came out of the Transfer station, with a printer table that somebody got tired of and fits our needs nicely!
Kevin is also working on the Annual facility report for the Landfill which goes to the state when completed. We are also writing a report to fill the requirements of state environmental rules so that we can drill our new water wells. Hydrosource (the company that has done the groundwater work for the town) is bidding out the drilling and we should have bids in a few weeks.
EPA has sent a letter of deficiency to the sewer department in regards to an inspection completed last month. We will be addressing these problems in the next few weeks to correct them.
